The Kaleidoscope Sharingan is a transformation of the Sharingan. It was first seen among the Uchiha after Madara Uchiha and Izuna Uchiha awakened that power. It is said to be the strongest of all ocular jutsu, whose awakening does not come without sacrifice.[1][2]

History[]

The Sharingan was an ocular jutsu and bloodline trait of the Uchiha clan. According to Tobirama Senju, Sharingan is said to be awakened by an Uchiha's hatred, which naturally occurs when their bond with a special person is threatened.[3] It is called a "special condition", triggered by a special chakra in the Uchiha's brain that reacts with their optic nerves. The Sharingan is thus a phenomenon that reflects the heart.[4]The stronger these feelings are, the stronger the Sharingan becomes.[5] This ultimately culminates in the awakening of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan, symbolizing the height of Madara's power.[6]

The Kaleidoscope Sharingan was first seen among the Uchiha when awakened by Madara Uchiha and his younger brother, Izuna Uchiha.[7] It was said that the two brothers strived to find new heights for their powers, and eventually came to awaken the eyes. Although it is not explictly stated, it is implied that the awakening of the eyes was an indirect consequence of them murdering another clan member.[8] Madara then took control of the Uchiha clan, appointing himself as it's leader.[9] His eyes were said to leave shinobi on the battlefield in tremor.[10] He is legendary for taming the Kyubi as if it was a pet, and used it during his battle with Hashirama Senju.[11][12]

At some point a consequence of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan's use was discovered. That is, the eyes become progressively blind with use, and the power will shut itself off.[13] Madara eventually transplanted his brother's eyes, which gained an everlasting light and bore a distinct appearance. According to Itachi Uchiha, this transplant can only take place between clan members, not everyone gained new powers, and these truths were only realized after numerous sacrifices.[14] It became somewhat commonplace for Uchiha to kill their relatives in order to gain the Kaleidoscope Sharingan, and later make it's power permanent.[15]

Madara's legend was at some point documented on the Uchiha stone monument, the contents of which can only be read progressively by the Sharingan, Kaleidoscope Sharingan, and Rinnegan.[16][17]

Abilities[]

Movement Reading[]

The Kaleidoscope Sharingan is implied to give the user significant observation skills, implying that it's ability to read movements has improved.[18]

Time-delayed Spells[]

The Kaleidoscope Sharingan allows the user to transfer jutsu, as well as setting a timer or condition that will trigger the jutsu. This was first shown when Itachi Uchiha transferred the ocular jutsu Amaterasu into his brother Sasuke's eyes, which when used, caused Sasuke's eye to take on the same appearance as Itachi's.[19] Itachi then set a condition which restricted the jutsu from activating unless it comes into contact with the eyes of Obito Uchiha, who was originally assumed to be Madara Uchiha.[20]

A similar event took place during the battle between Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, where Madara delayed the activation of the ocular genjutsu Izanagi in his right eye. After Madara was defeated, killed, and presumed dead, his body was taken by Tobirama Senju for studies, and hidden deep in the forest of Konohagakure. However, Izanagi activated in Madara's right eye, rendering his death as nothing more than an dream, and allowing him to live again.[21] This echoes Itachi Uchiha's sentiments that the Izanagi had been designed to change a person's fate, and the Izanami had been created to prevent them from running from their fate.[22]

The use of time-delayed spells was last seen when Itachi had transferred Shisui's left eye into one of his crows, which was then sealed into Naruto.

[23] He then placed a seal that dictated that the crow would emerge and cast the genjutsu Koto'Amatsukami if it ever saw Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan, presuming Sasuke had taken Itachi's eyes and decided to attack Konohagakure. When Itachi was brought back to life as an Edotensei however, and put to capture Naruto, he forced the crow to emerge by activating his Mangekyo Sharingan[24][25], and it freed him from the Edotensei by using Koto'Amatsukami.[26]

Ocular Genjutsu[]

The Kaleidoscope Sharingan is a superior transformation of the Sharingan, said to hide frightening power, as well as risks.[27] It's Saimingan ability is improved, allowing it's user to cast a superior brand of genjutsu that can trap the target instantly.[28][29]

In addition, Itachi claimed that an ability of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan in general, is the ability to control biju, especially the Kyubi.[30] Madara Uchiha was the first person to control the Kyubi, though he is later shown doing this without the Kaleidoscope Sharingan activated, as Obito Uchiha was shown doing during the infamous Kyubi attack on Konohagakure, to the point where he was even mistaken for Madara.[31][32]

Variants[]

Madara Uchiha[]

Madara Uchiha's bond with a friend was broken, though it's unclear if he killed that person himself. His only known ocular jutsu is Susanoo, which presumably makes him a user of Amaterasu and Moonreader. He was also able to completely control the Kyubi after awakening his Kaleidoscope Sharingan, a feat only matched by Obito Uchiha. Madara however, integrated the Kyubi into his arsenal. As an exceptional individual, Madara discovered the final secret of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan, perfecting it's transformation.[33][34] This would afford him the use of eternal ocular powers.[35]

Izuna Uchiha[]

Little is known about Izuna's Kaleidscope Sharingan. According to the 3rd databook, when his brother Madara's eyes became blind, it was a symbol of ruin of the clan. In order to ensure the protection of the clan, Izuna would later give his eyes to Madara, an act tantamount to suicide, for the Uchiha owe their fame to their ocular jutsu.[36] Madara was accused of "stealing" his brother's eyes for selfish reasons.[37][38] It was later shown that after being mortally wounded, Izuna gave Madara his eyes in order to ensure the Uchiha clan is protected.[39]

Shisui Uchiha[]

Shisui's Kaleidoscope Sharingan granted him what is championed as the best genjutsu of his eyes, called Koto'Amatsukami, famous for being able to manipulate individuals without them noticing. It is also capable of Overwriting the seal used by Kabuto for his Edo Tensei jutsu, and allowed Itachi to regain control over his body.[40] It is unknown how Shisui awakened his Kaleidoscope Sharingan.

Prior to his death, his right eye was stolen by Danzo Shimura and would see future use in the Gokage summit[41], while his left eye was given to Itachi Uchiha, who later transplanted it into a crow.[42] Shisui's eyes were quite valuable, sought after by Danzo, Obito, Kabuto, and the pair was ultimately destroyed by both owners to prevent enemies from aquiring them.[43][44]

Itachi Uchiha[]

Itachi gained his Kaleidoscope Sharingan after aiding his best friend Shishui in his suicide. He awoke Moonreader in his left eye, Amaterasu in his right eye, and Susanoo as a symbol of his mastery beyond those two eyes.

Use of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan's ocular jutsu caused Itachi extreme strain on his eyes and his chakra reserves. His vision had been little more than a blur at the time of his death. After Itachi's death, Sasuke later transplanted his eyes and Choku-Tomoe Kaleidoscope Sharingan.

Kakashi Hatake[]

Kakashi awakened his Kaleidoscope Sharingan after accidentally murdering Rin. He uses a distinct ocular jutsu with it, called Kamui. Kamui creates a barrier, within which a depression appears and sucks in all that is trapped within the barrier to another dimension.[45] Though it can pull in an entire human body with skillful use[46], It can also be used offensively to decapitate enemies.[47][48] With enough chakra, Kakashi can even transport an entire biju, although not perfectly.[49][50]

Over time, Kakashi became skillful enough teleport from the dimension shared by him and Obito.[51][52] Use of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan puts Kakashi's body at risk more so than a Uchiha's, and this jutsu can only be used after he takes time to create the necessary chakra.[53]

Eventually, Obito passed his Mangekyo Sharingan to Kakashi as a gift before he becomes Hokage. With the complete pair of Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi was able to use a completed Susano'o.[54] Susano'o was also enhanced by the chakra of the Rikudo Sage, which was passed to Kakashi by Obito.[55]

Obito Uchiha[]

Obito Uchiha awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan after witnessing the death of his former teammate Rin at the hands of Kakashi Hatake, who was also a former teammate. Obito uses the ocular jutsu Kamui, although it differs with his right eye. He considers this incarnation to be the most authentic of the two.[56] To begin with, his variant of the ocular jutsu allows him to inexplicably transfer the parts of his body that makes contact with any objects, into another dimension, making it appear as if enemy attacks slipped through him when he is in fact no longer on the same plane of existence.[57][58] He does not have control over which parts of his body are sent away, making him unable to attack while using this ability[59], and can also choose to send away things he's making contact with as a means of protecting them.[60] Obito can maintain this ability for about 5 minutes at a time.[61]

The second ability he's shown with this ocular jutsu is the ability to teleport himself. Because this is a trait of the eye and does not involve seals or summoning tattoos, this ability is claimed to be superior to the space-time jutsu of the 2nd and 4th hokage of Konohagakure.[62][63]

The final ability he's shown with this eye is the ability to teleport outside objects into or out of the dimension that holds his body parts. This however, causes him to become vulnerable to their attacks if he chooses to send his body there.[64] Being swallowed into this area may easily trap whoever is sent there, although Obito can move back and forth between his dimension and the mundane world.[65] He also appears to be able to keep trapped shinobi under ocular genjutsu.[66] He can also summon weapons, such as shurikens and stakes and direct them without touching them.[67] Use of this ability causes Obito to become vulnerable to attacks, as his body needs to be present in the mundane world to draw objects into or out of the dimension.[68]

After the failure of his Project Tsuki no me plan, Obito was betrayed by Madara Uchiha. He eventually regained both of his eyes during the battle with Kaguya Ohtsutsuki, and was capable of using both eyes to simultaneously cast Kamui.[69] By resonating Kamui at the same time as when Kamui opened her time-space, Obito created a rift within her time-space, while also traveling through another.[70]

After sacrificing himself to protect Kakashi, Sasuke, and Naruto, Obito's soul moved into the spiritual plain, where he met his comrade, Rin Nohara.[71] Before departing, Obito went back to the physical world and gave Kakashi his Sharingan, as well as the chakra of the Rikudo Sage.[72][73]

Sasuke Uchiha[]

Sasuke awakened his Kaleidoscope Sharingan after his battle with Itachi, which was meant to cut the bond between the two and thus trigger the activation.[74] Sasuke is a user of Susanoo, suggesting he is a user of Moonreader and Amaterasu. With his ocular powers, Sasuke is able to freely modify the conflagration produced by Amaterasu, resulting in an erratic ocular jutsu called Enton: Kagu-tsuchi. Like Madara Uchiha before him, Sasuke transplanted the eyes of his brother, resulting in the genetic perfection of the Kaleidoscope Sharingan .[75]
